Material and workmanship

The entire silver holder of this cup is gilded — the warm gold tone encloses the white porcelain body like a frame. The niello ornament on the gold band stands out in deep black, further enhancing the gilding. The gold is applied after shaping, the niello blackening is melted into the engraved depressions and permanently bonds with the metal underneath.
