Material and craftsmanship

The case is made entirely of 925 sterling silver, polished to a high sheen. On the outside lies a rocaille cartouche with a curved contour, framed by acanthus leaf vines and volutes. Inside this cartouche sits a finely guilloché background, a grid of densely set lines from which a central floral rosette emerges in relief. The entire composition is exclusively engraved; there is no gold plating, no niello inlay, and no other color layer. The depth contrast is created solely by shadows in the engraved depressions: from close up, the ornament appears three-dimensional and clear; from a distance, the surface remains calm and restrained. The case is crafted at the Mstera manufactory in the village of the same name in Russia's Vladimir region, a place with a long tradition of icon painting, lacquer art, and goldsmithing. Each piece bears its own manufacturer's hallmark (kleymo).

With this case, it has a pleasant side effect: the mirror-polished high surface may become slightly duller over time, while more patina collects in the line depressions, which makes the ornament stand out even more. With a soft silver polishing cloth, the high-gloss surface can be refreshed at any time without losing the line depressions and thus the ornament. No, this is not niello. Niello is a black inlay that is melted into the engraved lines, sanded flat, and polished – like ink in silver. In the Argento case, the lines are exclusively engraved; the darker impression is created by shadows in the depressions, not by a melted-in inlay.
