Material and workmanship

The case is made entirely of 925 sterling silver, highly polished. On the outside there is a rocaille cartouche with a curved outline, framed by acanthus leaf scrolls and volutes. Inside this cartouche is a finely guilloched background, a grid of densely set lines, from which a central floral rosette stands out plastically. The entire composition is exclusively engraved, no gilding, no niello inlay, no other layer of color. The depth contrast is created solely by shadows in the engraved depressions: from close up, the ornament appears sculptural and clear, from a distance, the surface remains calm and restrained. The case is manufactured in the Mstera factory in the village of the same name in the Russian Vladimir region, a place with a long tradition in icon painting, lacquer painting, and goldsmithing. Each piece bears its own manufacturer's mark in addition to the 925 silver hallmark.

With this case, this has a pleasant side effect: the mirror-polished high surface can become slightly duller over time, while a little more patina collects in the line depressions, which even makes the ornament stand out more strongly. The high-gloss surface can be refreshed at any time with a soft silver polishing cloth, without the line depressions and thus the ornament being lost. Storing it dry, preferably in the supplied gift case, also protects against rapid tarnishing.

No, this is not niello. Niello is a special technique using a black sulfur-silver-copper-lead paste that is melted into engraved lines. With the Argento case, the lines are exclusively engraved; the darker impression is created by shadows in the depressions, not by a melted paste.
