Description
Akanthia Silver Sugar Bowl — The Entrance
When a sugar bowl graces the table before the first word is spoken — it is from this line. The Akanthia stands on a tall trumpet base, its vase-shaped column elegantly flowing into a profiled footring. Above it, the curved goblet bowl arches. A domed lid with a pointed teardrop finial completes the design. All 925 Sterling Silver, hallmarked, tested. A silver sugar bowl that doesn't need explaining — it explains itself.
Diamond Medallion and Acanthus Volutes — Empire Architecture
The niello motif on the bowl is not a continuous pattern. It's a composition: At the center, a diamond medallion with a dotted grid infill — geometric, precise, powerful. It is flanked by two acanthus volutes that unfold symmetrically on either side. On the domed lid, the same language is repeated in a different form: a central palmette motif with two lateral volute scrolls. A narrow decorative strip with the same acanthus elements runs along the footring — a complete ornamental system from base to tip.
The acanthus motif originates from antiquity. The curved leaf volutes adorned Corinthian columns, triumphal arches, and imperial coins. In Russian goldsmithing, the motif found its way into the niello workshops of Veliky Ustyug — a city known for this technique for over 340 years. Niello is not a surface. It is an inlay: an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into engraved depressions and chemically bonds with the silver. 15 working steps. No foil, no lacquer — a part of the metal itself. Polishing deepens the contrasts, and the piece becomes more beautiful with age.
Expandable to a Set — The Integrated Spoon Holder
What at first glance appear to be decorative openings on the sides of the bowl are a well-thought-out function: There are three openings on each side — six in total. No handles. No decoration. Integrated holders for six teaspoons.
The solo sugar bowl is thus more than a single piece. It is the basis of the Akanthia Tea Gift Service SW10209 — seven pieces, the same signature. Whoever buys the bowl today can later add the six matching niello teaspoons. The spoons sit in the holders, the set is complete — without modification, without accessories. A decision that is inherent in the piece itself.
Collector's Item and Centerpiece for Formal Dining
The Akanthia belongs on tables where moments matter. For weddings, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, silver anniversaries. As a gift for people who have everything — except a piece that endures. As a representative object for an office that communicates quality. As a display piece for silver collectors who understand niello tradition.
The piece comes in gift packaging. For wedding gifts or special occasions, we recommend personal engraving — to make a beautiful piece truly unique.
Engraving & SilberVerse Card
The Akanthia can be customized upon request. Whether initials, a date, or a personal message — engraving gives the piece a second story. Upon request, we can include a personal SilberVerse card in photo format (10×15 cm) — individually designed, suitable for the occasion, and currently free of charge. The piece comes freshly made from the manufacturer, produced in small quantities, reorders possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
What distinguishes the Akanthia from an ordinary silver sugar bowl?
Form, function, and signature together: The tall trumpet base and the domed lid give the Akanthia a goblet silhouette that immediately stands out on a formal table. The niello motif — diamond medallion with acanthus volutes — is not a printed decoration, but a melted inlay permanently embedded in the silver. And the six integrated spoon holders transform the silver sugar bowl into an expandable tea service — a detail only discovered upon closer inspection.
What do the openings on the sides of the bowl mean?
They are neither handles nor decorative cutouts. The six openings — three per side — are integrated holders for six teaspoons. By adding the matching niello spoons from the Akanthia line, the solo bowl transforms into the complete 7-piece Tea Gift Service SW10209. No additional accessories, no conversion — the function is inherent in the piece itself.
Is the sugar bowl suitable for daily use?
Yes. 925 Sterling Silver is a robust precious metal that withstands everyday use. Niello is food-safe and chemically stable — no coating, no sealant that could peel off. For care, we recommend a soft silver polishing cloth. The rule of thumb is: polishing deepens the contrasts between the bright silver and the dark niello — the piece gains character over time.
As a gift for a wedding or anniversary — is it suitable?
Very much so. The Akanthia is a classic representational gift for people who appreciate quality and who cannot be surprised with everyday items. The goblet format, the hallmarked sterling silver, and the niello tradition of Veliky Ustyug give the piece weight — both literally and figuratively. For wedding gifts and anniversaries, we also recommend personal engraving with a date or initials.
Can I buy the bowl as a single piece and add to the set later?
That is precisely the idea behind it. SW10189 is the solo sugar bowl — a complete, standalone piece. The six integrated spoon holders are designed for the teaspoons from the Akanthia Tea Gift Service. If desired, one can buy the bowl today and later add the six matching niello spoons. The set grows with you — at your own pace and budget.
