What you see here is not an industrially formed pitcher with a decorative print. It is a piece made of 925 sterling silver, whose ornaments are neither printed nor stamped. They are hand-engraved — and subsequently filled with niello.

Three details that make the Legende special

First, the four-legged base: Instead of a one-piece pedestal ring, the carafe features four individual, gilded feet with laurel leaf ornamentation. Second, the Empire-style handle — richly curved, with a leaf motif at the top attachment and a spherical finish at the bottom, entirely gilded. Third, the niello band that winds around the body with lush acanthus vines.

The edge of the lid, the rim of the spout, and the lid knob are also gilded. Here, the gold is not a mere accent; it supports the form — and makes the silver in between appear all the more clear.

What niello means — and why it makes a difference

Niello is one of the oldest refinement techniques in metalwork. A dark alloy is melted into the hand-engraved ornaments. Afterward, the surface is ground and polished — this creates the contrast between the bright silver and the dark, deeply embedded patterns.
