Dessert spoon, 925 silver – Cancer, gilded and niello

A dessert spoon bearing a zodiac sign is more than just cutlery — it is a small dedication to a specific person. For those born under the sign of Cancer (June 21–July 22), this 925 sterling silver spoon displays the Cancer symbol in its gold-plated bowl: finely engraved, filled with gold, and framed by a serene silver rim. At the end of the handle, a niello floral ornament in matte black provides a counterpoint to the warm gold tone of the stem. A piece for birthdays at the beginning of summer that does not disappear into a drawer after the first festive dessert, but instead remains on display in a cabinet.

Material and craftsmanship

The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver and is gold-plated on the bowl and handle. In the bowl, you can recognize the crab with its characteristic shell and forward-facing claws, the classic representation of the zodiac sign — executed as a fine engraving and filled with gold so that the motif stands out clearly from the silvery shimmering base of the bowl. The entire stem bears the same warm gold tone. At the end of the handle, where the hand holds the spoon, there is a floral ornament created using the niello technique: a black inlay that is fused into finely pre-engraved lines, ground flat, and polished — like ink in silver. No lacquer, no coating: the ornament actually deepens rather than fades during polishing. This niello technique has its roots in the Veliky Ustyug silversmithing tradition, first mentioned in writing in 1683; the SevChern manufactory continues this tradition to this day.

Astrologically, Cancer represents depth, a sense of family, and a keen sensitivity to moods. These qualities resonate in the motif without the need for words: the crab appears in the Heracles myth, placed by Hera at the hero's side as a guardian. Giving this item to someone with this zodiac sign provides them with a piece that feels perfectly tailored to them.

Use and occasions

As a dessert spoon, this piece finds its place at festive dinners, for Sunday cake, or for a mousse au chocolat at an anniversary — anywhere a spoon is meant to be more than just a tool. It is particularly suitable as a gift for those born under the sign of Cancer, for birthdays at the start of summer. It is equally appropriate for confirmations, anniversaries, as a wedding gift for a couple sharing this zodiac sign, or as a godchild gift with a personal connection. For people to whom home is sacred, this spoon is a gift that will last beyond the occasion — as a collector's item in their own zodiac set or as the start of a complete cutlery set featuring the same motif.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

The bowl already bears the gold-plated zodiac symbol, the stem is fully gold-plated, and the handle end displays the niello ornament — an additional engraving would damage these three surfaces and is therefore not part of the standard service. For those who still wish to add a personal touch to the gift, the SilberVerse card is the perfect choice: a digitally designed, landscape-format photo card (15 × 10 cm), available free of charge upon request with every order, individually tailored to the occasion, and a beautiful counterpart to the zodiac motif on the spoon itself.

Care

Hand washing with mild dish soap and immediate dry polishing are the best ways to maintain its shine and contrast. The dishwasher is off-limits, as are silver dips or aggressive cleaning agents — both can damage the gold plating and the niello inlay. The dry gift case is sufficient for storage; if needed, a soft silver polishing cloth will help restore its luster.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Cancer symbol on this dessert spoon mean? Astrologically, Cancer stands for depth, a sense of family, and a fine sensitivity to moods. In the gold-plated bowl, this becomes a visible gift — a classic zodiac emblem instead of letters or phrases.

For which birthdays is this dessert spoon suitable? The zodiac sign Cancer includes birthdays from June 21 to July 22. For anyone celebrating during this time, the spoon is a gift with high recognition value — it works just as well as a godchild gift or a collector's item in a zodiac cutlery set.

How do I properly care for the spoon? Wash by hand, polish dry immediately, and store in a dry place. You should avoid dishwashers and silver dips so that the gold plating and niello inlay retain their contrast.
