Material and Workmanship

The head of the pastry fork is spoon-shaped with three short, wide tines at the front edge – a shape that securely picks up soft cake pieces. At the transition to the handle is a florally engraved field, and on the handle itself, a slender cartouche with the Astra ornament: deep engraving with niello filling on a gilded background. In the niello technique, a dark silver alloy is melted by hand into the engraved lines, creating the characteristic contrast between warm gold and dark pattern. The pastry fork is manufactured by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, one of the traditional centers of Russian niello art, and bears the Russian silver hallmark as a proof of quality.
