Square — and yet not quite. On all four sides, the edges are recessed so deeply that a cross shape is formed, with corners extending outward like wings. This is not an end in itself: the recessed edges give the surface a center, and whatever is placed upon it is visually brought together.

The shape

Where an ordinary square platter has a straight edge, this one curves inward. Four arches, each in the center, cut into the square — leaving four strong corners that stand out like outriggers. In technical terms, such a contour is called cruciform; it originates from the repertoire of forms of the Italian Baroque, where the quiet square was perceived as too still.

The effect is more practical than it looks: the recessed sides provide space for hands. A platter of this size is held by the corners, and that is precisely where the material is, while the centers of the edges remain free.

Grapes instead of acanthus

The ornament of the rim differs from the rest of the assortment: instead of pure acanthus scrollwork, this platter bears grape motifs — vine leaves and dense clusters of berries amidst the foliage. On silverware, this is an old reference to wine, harvest, and hospitality, making the platter the obvious piece for anything served with wine.

The work is hand-chased: driven into the silver with punches, not stamped. The berries emerge in relief, while the foliage remains flatter — a height difference that only hand craftsmanship creates.

The inside remains a smooth center, the octagonal shape of which mirrors the contour of the platter.

Material and origin

A silver-plated piece could not be produced this way — the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be polished repeatedly because the layer would become thinner. Solid silver withstands both: the handiwork during creation and the care over generations.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. Their signature is the richly chased line of the house.

How to use it

A selection of cheeses with grapes and nuts, an antipasti arrangement, the appetizer platter for six to eight. Because of the grape motif, it is the go-to piece for a wine evening — as a base for cheese and bread next to a carafe and glasses.

On a sideboard, it holds its own even when empty: the cross shape casts a play of shadows with its corners that a round platter would not.

Engraving

The octagonal center is flat and ornament-free. A centered engraving — monogram, coat of arms, or date — complements the symmetry of the shape. Care

By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher — cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain trapped between the raised berries. Clean promptly after contact with cheese or acidic foods. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker tint may remain in the crevices. The recessed shape

Four recessed sides, four protruding corners — the manufacturer calls this shape Square Scalloped Cross. Among the platters in this line, it is the only one that deviates from the square and circle.

There is a visible reason for this: the recessed edges give the surface a center. Whatever lies on it is visually gathered instead of being spread out over a uniform surface. For a single cake, a cheese selection, or a centerpiece, this is the more favorable shape.
