Material and craftsmanship
The tray thinks in zones rather than a monochrome surface. The narrow outer edge is fully gilded and highly polished — warm, rich, the first impression as soon as the piece is placed on the table. Behind it follows a wider decorative ring on a bright, natural silver background: four large, stylistically floral blossoms with curved leafy tendrils, inlaid in niello, each offset by 90 degrees and thus symmetrically distributed across the surface. Two gilded dividing rings clearly frame this zone at the top and bottom. The central field — the mirror — is again fully gilded, mirror-smooth and free of ornament; this is where the functionality of the tray lies, whether for a glass, a carafe, or a cup. Niello is a silver-sulfur alloy that is melted into engraved indentations, ground down after cooling, and polished — a rich, deep black that requires no paint or lacquer and bonds with the silver both chemically and physically. The gilding is applied electrolytically with a 0.5-micron layer of 24-karat gold — thin, yet durable precisely because the silver itself forms the supporting base.
