Description
For your first Kiddush set, this is the most natural combination: small enough for any table, complete, and without the need to coordinate two separate items. It is often given as a wedding gift—whenever a household observes the Shabbat for the first time on its own.
At a glance
- Kiddush set in 925 sterling silver: cup and plate
- Cup approx. 9 cm, plate approx. 16 × 16 cm — combined silver weight approx. 0.64 kg
- Cup with flared base, interior gold-plated
- Plate with circular indentation as a cup stand
- Both pieces chased by hand
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
Why a set
Cups and plates belong together for Kiddush, but are often purchased separately — with the result that dimensions, ornamentation, and finish do not match. The cup then stands on a plate that was not intended for it.
With a set, this issue is resolved. The plate's indentation is matched to the base of the cup, the ornamentation follows the same stylistic signature, and the polish is identical. Both pieces are designed together and crafted together.
For those starting out—such as at a wedding when a new household is formed—this is the simplest way to acquire complete ritual equipment.
The Kiddush
The Kiddush — "sanctification" — opens Shabbat and holidays. The blessing is recited over a cup of wine held in the speaker's hand. Afterward, the wine is drunk, and the cup is passed around.
The cup is filled to the brim; the fullness represents blessings in abundance. This is exactly why the plate is included: it catches any overflow and protects the tablecloth and wood. The circular indentation also holds the cup securely in place.
The cup
At approx. 9 cm with a flared base, it rests steadily in the hand and can be set down safely between sips. It has no handle — a Kiddush cup is held in the palm of the hand, not by a handle.
The interior is gold-plated. There is a practical reason for this: wine is acidic, silver reacts to it, and the inside of a cup cannot be polished. Gold does not react — which is why interior gilding has been customary for silver drinking vessels for centuries.
Material and origin
The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated ware is twofold for a cup: chasing only succeeds in solid silver — a plating would tear during hammering — and the interior gilding provides protection exactly where one cannot polish. A cup that is filled over decades needs both.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased: hammered into the silver by hand with punches, not stamped under a press. No section repeats the previous one exactly.
At the Shabbat table
The beginning of Shabbat includes two candles lit before sunset, the cup of wine, and two braided loaves under a cloth. The Kiddush comes first in this sequence: first the candles, then the blessing over the wine, followed by hand washing and the blessing over the bread.
Those who acquire ritual items piece by piece therefore almost always start here.
As a gift
For a wedding, when two people establish a household and need their own equipment for the first time. For a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. A complete set is the gift for occasions where completeness matters — and it can be purchased jointly by several gift-givers.
Engraving
The smooth indentation of the plate and the base rim of the cup can be engraved. With sets, usually only one piece is engraved — often the plate, so that the cup remains untouched. We will coordinate this with you in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — including the inside of the cup. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver and would damage the gilding. Rinse quickly after use so that no wine dries on. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth in the chased recesses may remain. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.
Frequently asked questions
Do I receive both pieces together?
Yes — the cup with base, approx. 9 cm, and the plate, approx. 16×16 cm, are crafted together and delivered in one package. Both parts are also available individually.
What is the set made of?
Of 925 sterling silver, which consists of 92.5% fine silver; the cup interior is gold-plated.
Is it kosher?
We sell silver items and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal advice. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your community.
How much does the cup hold?
At approx. 9 cm in height, it holds a standard glass of wine. We are happy to provide the exact volume before you order.
Is it delivered in a gift box?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
The two parts of the set
Included are the Kiddush cup with base, approx. 9 cm, and the square plate, approx. 16×16 cm. Both are available individually — as a set, they come from the same production run and in one package.
For a first own Kiddush set, this combination is the obvious choice: small enough for any table, complete, without the need to coordinate two separate articles. It is often given as a wedding gift when a household observes the Shabbat for the first time.
With gold accents, the line features the partially gold-plated Kiddush set. Those who prefer something larger will find the same stylistic signature on a different scale in the Eliyahu sets.
Both pieces together form a small ensemble that can also be displayed when not in use — cup on the plate, on a sideboard, or in a display cabinet. Because the set is used weekly, an easily accessible place is more practical than a cupboard anyway.
