Material and workmanship

The floral band on the body of this pot — blossoms, tendrils, leaves in the plant style of classic Russian silversmithing — is hand-engraved into the 925 silver. Then niello is applied: a dark alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into the engraving and forms a chemical-physical bond with the silver. Not an application, not a layer, not a lacquer — what appears black here is part of the metal itself. Approximately fifteen working steps lie between the first sketch and the finished pot, from engraving to firing to final polishing. The result is food-safe and durable: In thirty years, the same black will sit on the same silver — and with each polish, the contrast will deepen further.

Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild dish soap — no dishwasher, no silver dip. The niello ornament is permanently fused; normal cleaning will not harm it. The frosted surface can be refreshed with a soft silver polishing cloth. The pot is well protected in its gift box between uses.
