Which icon is familiar in Russian families? Often Our Lady of Kazan. This christening set in 925 silver carries her in the medallion of the spoon. A consecrated cross lies next to it in the case.

Our Lady of Kazan and her meaning

The icon is among the most venerated images of Mary in Russia. According to tradition it was found in Kazan in the 16th century. It shows Mary with the Child in her arms. Many families keep it in the house as an image of blessing.

In the medallion, mother and child can be seen in relief.

Blackened silver with medallion and small crown

A small crown closes the medallion at the top. The recesses are blackened on the surface, while the raised areas stay light. Tendrils run along the handle.

The spoon weighs approx. 13 g at a format of 113 × 26 × 10 mm. To this comes a cross of approx. 1 g in weight. Together this makes approx. 14 g of silver.

The prayer behind the medallion

On the back of the medallion a prayer verse in three lines stands in relief. In Church Slavonic it reads “Пресвятая Богородице спаси нас”. That means: “Most Holy Mother of God, save us.” The bowl carries a fine tendril border on its back.

Name engraved on the handle

The image is known as an image of blessing at weddings and family celebrations. It shows a child who is safe with its mother. The medallion brings this image to the table at the size of a spoon handle.

Both pieces rest consecrated in the case, consecrated by the parish of the Svyato-Pokrovsky Church in Kolchugino, an Orthodox parish. The certificate comes with it. No assurance of protection is meant by this.

Trefoil ends, corpus and eyelet belong to the cross, which measures approx. 20 mm. The cord is white and comes with the set. The photos show the cross without it.
