For Which Gathering
A Seder evening with six people is different from one with twenty. In a small group, you sit close together, everything is within reach, and a 25 cm cup has enough impact.
At a long table, this changes. The person at the end is five or six meters from the center. A small item disappears there among plates, glasses, and candles—it's there, but it's no longer noticed.
A cup height of approx. 33 cm is the measure that bridges this distance. The square plate, approx. 26.5 cm, provides the surface that identifies it as an independent object.
How the Two Parts Work Together
The cup base measures approx. 15 cm—it needs standing surface. A round plate would have to grow significantly for this; the square offers additional space in the corners without becoming overall expansive.
Both parts use the same method: sculptural relief in places where the form needs a caesura. On the cup, these are the freestanding leaf tips and the chased nodus, the knot on the shaft where one grasps a standing vessel. On the plate, the four corner sections.
With a total weight of approx. 2.03 kg, the ensemble stands firm—even on a table where plates are passed around and someone bumps into it.
The Fifth Cup
At the Seder evening, four cups of wine are on the table from which one drinks—for the four promises of liberation. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet whose coming heralds future redemption.
Towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him—in many families, a child goes to do this. In a large gathering, it is this cup that everyone looks at at that moment.
Material and Origin
The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated ware is twofold for a cup: Chasing only works in solid silver—a plating would tear when being worked—and the internal gilding protects precisely where one cannot polish. A cup that is filled for decades needs both. The set is hallmarked.
The inside of the cup is gilded because it stands full of wine for hours, and silver reacts to acid.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased—hammered into the silver by hand with punches.
As a Gift
For a wedding, when a couple becomes hosts for larger gatherings. As a gift to a community. As a joint gift from multiple givers—the usual way for this price range.
A complete set saves the recipient the search for a suitable counterpart; for large-format cups, a harmonious plate is not found by chance.
Engraving
On the cup, the smooth foot rim with approx. 15 cm diameter remains—a generous area in this format. On the plate, the mirror and back are suitable. For sets, usually only one part is engraved. We will coordinate this with you in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly—including the inside of the cup. No dishwasher. Work carefully on the freestanding leaf tips; grasp the cup by the nodus or foot, not by the rim. A soft brush is suitable for the indentations. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silverware.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people is this format designed for?
For larger gatherings of about twelve people and long tables. For smaller groups, we recommend the set around 28 cm.
Are both parts included in the delivery?
Yes—the Jumbo cup with approx. 33 cm and the plate with approx. 28×28 cm. We also carry both parts individually.
Is the cup stable?
Yes. The approx. 15 cm wide base and the total weight make it tip-proof.
Is the set kosher?
We carry silver items and describe their use—we cannot provide halachic information. Questions about ritual suitability should be answered by your community.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality manufacturer packaging.
What's in the Jumbo Set
The Jumbo cup with approx. 33 cm and the plate with approx. 28×28 cm. The dimensions are coordinated—a relationship easily missed when purchasing individually: a 33 cm cup on a 24 cm plate appears top-heavy.
This size is made for long tables. From about ten place settings, a smaller cup disappears between candles, bowls, and plates; at 33 cm, it remains visible from every seat.
It starts smaller with the set with approx. 28.5 cm, and only gets larger with the ensemble with the 50 cm cup. With gold accents, the same size is available as a partially gilded Jumbo set.
A 33 cm cup with its plate needs a fixed place. Most households do not even put the Jumbo set away, but leave it on a sideboard or in a tall display cabinet—as an ensemble that shapes the room, and not just as an item for one evening a year.
