Material and workmanship

The Podstakannik, the metal tea glass holder, is a Russian invention whose history dates back to the 18th century. The glass remains hot, the holder protects the hand, and the outer wall becomes a surface for ornaments. On this holder, the central rider motif of the Sieger collection, set in an oval medallion, is shown, surrounded by a braided band and a field of ears of corn. The dark contours are created by niello: a black silver alloy of silver, copper, lead and sulfur, which is melted into fine, engraved depressions. Niello is not a lacquer or a paint, but a chemical-physical bond with the silver itself, which does not wear off and gains contrast with polishing. The handle, foot and spoon handle also have gilding, which adds a warm accent against the cool silver and the deep black of the niello. What distinguishes this set from an ordinary cup: The crystal glass shows the tea itself, its color, its infusion, its steam, while the silver holder frames this picture.

The set is made by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, a manufactory with a long tradition in niello hand engraving. The artist's personal manufactory mark is engraved on each piece and registered annually with the Russian Federal Assay Office. In 1937, the niello tradition from Veliky Ustyug received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris, proof of the standing of this niello tradition far beyond Russia.

Care

Holder and spoon are cleaned by hand: warm water, mild detergent, no dishwasher. A silver dip is taboo, as it would attack the niello inlays. Clean the crystal glass separately and carefully, also not in the dishwasher. Between uses, it is best to store the set in the supplied gift box, which protects both silver and glass.
