Description
Square – yet not quite. The edges on all four sides are drawn in so deeply that a cross shape is created, with its corners extending outwards like wings. This is not an end in itself: the recessed edges give the surface a center, and what lies on it is visually held together.

The Form
Where an ordinary square platter has a straight edge, this one draws it inwards. Four arcs, each centered, cut into the square – leaving four strong corners that protrude outwards like outriggers. In technical terms, such a contour is called cruciform; it originates from the form repertoire of Italian Baroque, where the quiet square was considered too still.
The effect is more practical than it looks: the recessed sides provide space for hands. A platter of this size is held at the corners, and that's exactly where the material is, while the center of the edges remains free.
Grapes Instead of Acanthus
The ornament on the rim differs from the rest of the assortment: instead of pure acanthus foliage, this platter features grape motifs – vine leaves and dense berry clusters intertwined with the foliage. On silverware, this is an ancient reference to wine, harvest, and hospitality, making the platter a natural choice for anything served with wine.
The work is hand-chased: hammered into the silver with punches, not stamped. The berries emerge sculpturally, while the foliage remains flatter – a difference in height that only handwork can create.
Inside remains a smooth mirror, whose octagonal shape echoes the contour of the platter.
Material and Origin
A silver-plated piece could not be produced this way – the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be polished repeatedly, as the layer would thin out. Solid silver tolerates both: the handcraft during creation and care over generations. The Italian hallmark of the manufacture identifies it.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The richly chased line is the house's signature.
What it's Used For
The cheese selection with grapes and nuts, the antipasto arrangement, the appetizer platter for six to eight. Because of the grape motif, it's the perfect piece for a wine evening – as a base for cheese and bread next to a carafe and glasses.
It also stands beautifully on a sideboard without content: The cruciform shape, with its corners, casts a play of shadows that a round platter does not create.
Engraving
The octagonal mirror is even and ornament-free. A centered engraving – monogram, crest, or date – reflects the symmetry of the form. Engraving upon request, placement to be agreed upon in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.
Occasions
For weddings, housewarmings, significant birthdays. As a gift for someone who enjoys entertaining guests and for whom a cheese platter is not an accessory but a course in itself. For wine anniversaries or as a gift to a winemaker, the grape motif is particularly fitting.
Care
Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher – cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain between the sculptural berries. Clean promptly after contact with cheese or acidic foods. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker tone may remain in the recesses. Frequently Asked Questions
How large is the usable surface?
The smooth octagonal mirror occupies the center; the wide chased rim is added on the outside. The mirror is sufficient for a cheese selection for six to eight people.
Why the recessed sides?
They are a Baroque design element and also provide space for hands at the corners when carrying.
Solid or silver-plated?
Solid 925 sterling silver, no plating, with official Italian hallmark.
What other platters does the line offer?
The round platter with approx. 46 cm, the large round platter with approx. 54.5 cm, and the square platter with approx. 24×24 cm.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
The Recessed Shape
Four recessed sides, four protruding corners – the manufacturer calls this shape Square Scalloped Cross. Among the platters in the line, it is the only one that deviates from the square and circle.
There is a visible reason for this: the recessed edges give the surface a center. What lies on it is visually held together, instead of being spread out over a uniform surface. For a single cake, a cheese selection, or an arrangement, this is the more favorable shape.
The linear alternatives are the round platter with approx. 46 cm and the large one with approx. 54.5 cm. If you need a raised rim, check out the silver trays.
