The folding icon sits in a brown leather cover with an embossed ornament. On the left, a silver plate shows the Mother of God with the Child, framed by a gold-coloured arch. On the right is a prayer in Church Slavonic.

It is the Hail Mary and begins with “Богородице Дево, радуйся”. In English this means “Mother of God, Virgin, rejoice”. The Panagia of Kazan is one of the best-known icons of Russian Orthodoxy.

Guardian angel spoon: Angel at the handle end, smooth bowl

In the oval handle end stands an angel in a dark drawing. Further down, the stem carries a small cross. The bowl stays smooth and reflects the light.

Cross pendant: Three crossbars on a dark ground

In the centre lies an Orthodox cross with rounded arms. All around it, the ground is dark. To the left and right are the letters IC XC, with NIKA below.

A white cord comes with the cross; in the photos it lies without it. Instead of white, it is also available in blue or pink. Tell us your colour choice in the “order note at checkout”, ideally next to the engraving text.

Niello in silver: A dark drawing that does not flake off

The angel on the spoon is drawn in niello. For this, the motif is engraved into the silver, filled with a dark compound and fired in. This way the drawing sits in the metal and not on it.

The letters are Greek. IC XC stands for Jesus Christ, NIKA means “conquers”. Together this reads as “Jesus Christ conquers”.

How do I care for the icon, spoon and cross?
Wipe the folding icon dry only, so that no water reaches the leather. The spoon needs lukewarm water, a drop of mild washing-up liquid and then a soft cloth. Rub the cross with a silver polishing cloth when needed and leave out the dark areas.
