Material and craftsmanship

Niello is neither a paint nor a varnish, but a fused sulfur alloy that bonds permanently and chemically-physically with the engraved silver – often aptly described as "ink in silver." The floral ornament on the handle of this dessert fork is created through fine deep engraving before the black compound is applied and polished. This technique does not fade, rub off, or change its depth over time; on the contrary, with every polish, the contrast between silver and black even deepens. This makes niello silver one of the few pieces of silverware that looks just as it did on the first day, even after decades. The floral ornamentation runs as a continuous design line throughout the entire Astra family – forks, knives, spoons, and serving pieces all share the same curved leaf-tendril motif.

Usage and occasions

Silver cutlery is not a gift for everyday life – it is a gift for moments that last. This Astra Black dessert fork is suitable for weddings, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and housewarmings. Arriving in the included gift box, it requires no further packaging. Whether you purchase individual pieces or gradually complete the collection: every Astra Black fork matches every other Astra piece and can be easily combined with spoons, knives, and serving cutlery from the same line.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

A classic stamped engraving is limited due to the niello ornament – please inquire before ordering which areas are suitable for this. As a personal message, we alternatively recommend our SilberVerse card: an individually designed card in 15 × 10 cm photo format, free of charge and tailored entirely to the occasion, recipient, and sender.

Care

The best way to care for niello silver is with warm water and a soft cloth. You should avoid abrasive agents and the dishwasher – not because the silver is delicate, but because aggressive cleaners can dull the niello ornament. With the right care, the contrast between silver and niello will be preserved for generations.
