Material and workmanship

Niello is not a color or lacquer, but a fused sulfur alloy that permanently and chemically-physically bonds with the engraved silver – often aptly described as "ink in silver." The floral ornament on the handle of this dessert fork is created through fine deep engraving before the black mass is applied and polished. This technique does not fade, rub off, or change its depth over time – on the contrary: With every polish, the contrast between silver and black deepens even further. This makes niello silver one of the few pieces of flatware that looks as good after decades as it did on the first day.
