Description
A solid silver carafe poses a question one never asks of glass: Why at all? Glass reveals the wine; silver conceals it. The answer lies not in the material, but in the occasion — this set is made for tables where the act of pouring itself is a sight to behold.
At a glance
- Two-piece set made of 925 sterling silver: carafe and tray
- Carafe approx. 42 cm high, capacity approx. 1 liter
- Tray approx. 25 × 25 cm, square
- Total silver weight approx. 2.37 kg — carafe approx. 1,700 g, tray approx. 670 g
- Openwork tendril design, hand-chased
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
What makes this set special
The body of the carafe is bulbous and covered in openwork tendril motifs — a technique in which parts of the wall are hand-sawn and refined. The neck is slender, the lid sits firmly on its own mount, and the handle ends at the top in a volute, the curled spiral familiar from Ionic columns.
The tray adopts the same ornamental language: an irregularly scalloped edge with the same vine decor. Both pieces were crafted for one another — this is evident from the fact that the width of the ornamentation on the carafe and the tray rim matches perfectly. This would not be the case with two randomly combined individual pieces.
Why silver instead of glass
Silver is flavor-neutral. For red wine, another point matters: The carafe stands on the table, not on a shelf, and a vessel of this size is meant to be seen.
For longer storage, the wine should be returned to the bottle. For serving at the table — for the evening for which it is intended — the carafe is the proper vessel.
Where this set belongs
The same composition is available with a gold-plated acanthus frieze. In that version, the raised parts of the ornament are accented with fine gold; the shape is identical, the appearance is different.
Belonging to the same line are jugs and vases with a related aesthetic: the Salome silver jug as an open vessel without a lid, and the openwork amphora featuring the same openwork technique. Additional vessels can be found in the Silver Carafes and Jugs category.
Wine at the set table
In Jewish traditions, wine is central: the Kiddush is recited over a cup of wine to usher in the Sabbath, and on the Seder night at Passover, four cups are part of the ritual. A carafe is not a ritual object in this context — it is the vessel from which one pours, and as such, it belongs on the same table.
The corresponding ritual pieces of this line can be found in the 925 Silver Judaica category: Kiddush cups, Seder plates, and the Cup of Elijah, which is filled but not drunk.
As a gift
A set of this size is gifted on occasions where a single item would not suffice: for weddings, silver anniversaries, or major corporate milestones. It is also a piece that is passed down — silver does not lose its value, and a carafe from which wine has been poured for decades carries its own history.
Engraving is possible upon review; we will advise on placement and length beforehand. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card (15 × 10 cm) free of charge.
Care
Clean by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts damage silver. The openwork tendrils can be reached with a soft brush; the darker patina may remain in the recesses, as it gives the ornament a three-dimensional effect. Rinse promptly after use so that wine does not dry on the surface. More details can be found in our guide on caring for silver cutlery and tableware.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the carafe hold?
About one liter — this corresponds to a wine bottle with some room to spare.
Is the set also available gold-plated?
Yes, as a set with a gold-plated acanthus frieze. Same dimensions, same shape; there, the raised ornament sections are accented with fine gold.
Does the wine take on a metallic taste?
No. 925 silver is flavor-neutral. For longer storage, the wine should still be returned to the bottle — the carafe is intended for serving.
Can the set be engraved?
Subject to review. Because the tendril work covers most of the visible surface, the tray base and the carafe foot are the primary candidates. We will evaluate this beforehand and advise you accordingly.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer; both pieces are individually cushioned.
