Material and craftsmanship

The floral ornamental band on the body and lid shows the classic botanical repertoire of Russian silversmithing: blossoms, vines, and leaves, densely set and symmetrically arranged. First, the engraver draws each line by hand into the 925 silver with a burin. Then follows niello — a black inlay that is melted into the grooves, ground flat, and polished, like ink in silver. No varnish, no coating: what appears black here is set within the metal itself. A piece of this kind goes through around fifteen work steps before the spout, handle, and lid are assembled — from the initial sketch to engraving and melting, through to the final polish. This pot does not become duller over time, but rather more beautiful: every polish deepens the contrast between the satin-finished silver and the jet-black ornament.

Care

Hand washing with lukewarm water and mild dish soap is sufficient. No dishwasher, no silver dip — both would damage the satin finish. The niello band is permanently melted in and can easily withstand normal cleaning. It is best to wash the lid separately. The matte surface can be refreshed in between times with a soft silver polishing cloth; the teapot is well protected in its gift case between occasions.
