Material and workmanship

The hop motif runs around the saucer as a continuous tendril ornament, engraved by hand into the silver and filled with niello. Niello is a black inlay that is fused into the engraved lines, sanded flush, and polished—like ink in silver. It is not an applied paint, but a permanent compound that does not wear off over the years, but rather gains contrast through polishing. The broad gilded rim frames this band and brings together the triad of warm gold, deep niello black, and bright silver. The design of the Hop collection dates back to a 1969 original and has been continued in this form by the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Northern Russia.

Usage and occasions

As a coffee saucer, this piece supports the matching cup from the Hop collection and turns an afternoon coffee into a special occasion. It is equally suitable as an addition to an existing Hop service, as a single gift for collectors of Russian silver art, or as a personal piece of tableware to gift to yourself. For a wedding, anniversary, or simply as a gesture to someone who appreciates table culture, this saucer is a gift that won’t disappear into a cupboard, but will remain on the table.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

Engraving is possible upon review; we will coordinate the appropriate surface with the manufactory. Upon request, we can also include a personal SilberVerse card in a 15 x 10 cm photo format—individually designed to suit the occasion and the recipient, free of charge.

Care

This saucer is for hand washing only: lukewarm water, mild detergent, no dishwasher. A silver dip bath should be avoided, as it can damage the niello inlay. The gilding is best cared for with a soft cloth, without abrasive polishes. Between uses, it is best to store the saucer in its gift case, which protects it from tarnishing.

Frequently asked questions

Does this saucer match the Hop coffee cup?

Yes. Both pieces feature the same hop motif in niello with gilding and are intended for use together on the table.

Can the saucer also be used individually?

Yes. It works as an independent piece of tableware, as an addition to an existing service, or as a collector's item and is delivered in a gift case.

What distinguishes niello from a normal engraving?

With a simple engraving, the line in the silver remains visible but open. In the niello process, a black inlay is additionally fused into the engraving, sanded flush, and polished, so that the contrast is permanently and inseparably bonded to the metal.
