This saucer is not an accessory. It is a standalone piece of silverware: D100 × H12 mm, 72 grams, featuring the characteristic hops motif of the collection of the same name — hand-engraved in niello, surrounded by gilded surfaces. The interplay between the polished silver, the deep dark niello ornament, and the warm gold of the background makes this saucer a striking object on the table, even before the cup is placed on it. The Hops Motif — an Ornament with History

SevChern's Hops collection is based on a design from 1969 — created in the Soviet handicraft tradition, which combined the highest niello quality with nature-inspired motifs. Hop tendrils and cones, hand-engraved into the silver and filled with niello, enclose the surface in a continuous, vibrant pattern. The gilded surfaces provide a contrast to the dark ornament: warmth against depth, gold against black.

Niello is not a color. It is a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, melted into the engraved lines at over 800 degrees Celsius. It combines insolubly with the silver — the pattern does not fade, it becomes more contrasting with each passing year.

SevChern — Niello from Veliky Ustyug

Veliky Ustyug, a town in the Vologda Oblast in Northern Russia, has been known for its niello silver work since 1683. The geographically protected designation of origin makes genuine Ustyug niello a protected product like Champagne: it may only be produced there. SevChern continues this tradition — each piece bears the manufacturer's mark, registered annually with the Russian Federal Assay Office.
