Description

The double-headed eagle with antique patination – that's a different story than the gilded version. Here, the coat of arms doesn't shine with a golden gleam; instead, the blackening in the recesses brings out its three-dimensional quality: dark lines outline every feather, every crown, every tail, while the raised surfaces gleam with silver. The result doesn't look representatively modern, but old, venerable, like a piece that might have come from the display cabinet of a railway director from the late Tsarist era.

Our "Antique Patinated Double-Headed Eagle" tea glass holder set is the classic sibling of the gilded version: same holder body, same diamond-patterned crystal glass, same premium case – but instead of partial gilding, the coat of arms features ArgentA's typical blackening. This makes the set appear calmer and more nostalgic.

The Double-Headed Eagle — A Brief Heraldic Classification

The double-headed eagle is one of Europe's oldest sovereign symbols. It originated in Byzantium, was the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and the House of Habsburg, the Serbian, Montenegrin, and Albanian royal houses — and since 1497 (after Ivan III's marriage to the Byzantine princess Sophia Palaiologina) also of the Russian Empire. The two heads look east and west, the three crowns stand for sovereignty, the scepter and orb for the sovereign's power; on its chest, the eagle bears the smaller shield with Saint George slaying the dragon — the old city coat of arms of Moscow.

On this holder, you see the eagle not in gold, but in silver high relief, whose recesses are antique patinated by the typical ArgentA blackening. This makes the plastic contours stand out more clearly than on a polished or gilded eagle — almost like a historical stamp.

The Podstakannik — and its special history with the railway

If you travel by train in Russia, even today you will receive your tea in a glass with a holder — the Podstakannik. This is not folklore, but a firmly established tradition: Since 1892, Podstakanniki have been official inventory of the Russian railway, supplied during the Soviet era by the factory in Kolchugino (today ArgentA) for all trains. Every conductor, every locomotive driver, every railway veteran knows the clinking of the spoon against the glass in the rolling carriage.

Precisely for this reason, THIS set in particular is a classic gift for railway workers, their widows, their children, their grandchildren — all who have a connection to the "rails". The coat of arms of Russia on the holder refers to the state character of the railway (RZhD = Russian Railways, coat of arms symbol), and the blackening gives the piece an antique-dignified patina that suits the generation of today's retired railway workers.

Even without a railway connection: anyone in Russian-German families thinking of a father, grandfather or uncle with a long professional life — civil servants, diplomats, engineers, officers — will find the right tone in this set: honorable, classic, without pomp.

What's in the set?

  • "Coat of Arms of Russia" antique patinated Podstakannik: 925 silver, height approx. 95 mm, Ø approx. 72 mm, approx. 128 g. Classicist column structure with a central oval medallion, in which the double-headed eagle is incorporated in silver high relief. Recesses blackened, raised surfaces polished. Acanthus volutes, laurel wreath with bow, stirrup handle with pearl rim.
  • "Edinstvo" ("Unity") Teaspoon: 925 silver, length approx. 130 mm, approx. 23 g. Classic handle with an oval handle crown, into which the double-headed eagle is incorporated as a fine embossing (without blackening on the spoon — only on the holder). High-gloss polished bowl.
  • "Chayny" (Diamond-patterned) Crystal Glass: classic Russian tea glass, approx. 200 ml, 65 × 100 mm, cut diamond pattern. Replaceable consumable part, easy to replace.
  • Premium Navy Blue Case: velvet-lined, approx. 132 × 132 × 165 mm. Protects the silver from air contact and is the ready-made gift packaging.

Antique Patination vs. Gilding — who chooses what?

We offer the coat of arms set in two finishing variants. Both use the same holder body and the same spoon style, only the surface treatment and thus the character differ:

  • Gilded Double-Headed Eagle: Eagle in warm gold on a silver base, representative, modern, festive. Suitable for offices, diplomatic gifts, very formal occasions.
  • Antique Patinated Double-Headed Eagle (this set): Eagle in silver high relief with dark patina in the recesses, classic-antique. Suitable for father/grandfather gifts, railway veterans, collectors of historical atmosphere.

Rule of thumb: Those who want to display the piece IN THE ROOM (display cabinet, reception office) tend to choose the gilded one. Those who want to USE it and give the recipient a memory tend to choose the antique patinated one.

When is the set particularly suitable?

  • Father's Day gift for men with a connection to Russia, railways, or tradition.
  • Grandfather's gift in Russian-German families — intended as an heirloom.
  • Retirement gift for railway workers, civil servants, teachers, officers with long careers.
  • Collectors of historical Russian symbolism, heraldry enthusiasts, numismatists.
  • Gift for railway clubs, railway museums, retired federal railway employees (the double-headed eagle is also the Habsburg coat of arms).
  • Russian-German family celebrations: confirmation, golden wedding, milestone birthday — as a piece with a connection to roots.

Materials and Care

925 Sterling silver, highly polished, with blackening in the recesses of the coat of arms medallion. The blackening is the ArgentA-typical superficial patination (NOT Niello — that is a different inlay technique of our SevChern line).

  • Holder and spoon should only be cleaned by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth — never in the dishwasher, never rub away the blackening in the recesses with silver polish.
  • Wipe dry after use, preferably store in the case — protects against air contact and delays natural tarnishing.
  • Diamond-patterned glass: dishwasher safe on a short, gentle cycle; by hand is gentler and leaves the glass clearer.
  • For heavier tarnishing of polished surfaces: use a soft silver polishing cloth without abrasives on the raised areas, never in the blackened recesses.

Comparison: Antique Double-Headed Eagle vs. the other Argenta Tea Sets

We now offer six Argenta tea sets side by side. Which one suits which occasion?

  • Antique Patinated Double-Headed Eagle (this set): Russian coat of arms with blackening. Railway veteran, father, grandfather, heirloom.
  • Gilded Double-Headed Eagle: Gilded coat of arms, representative. Diplomats, offices, festive occasions.
  • The Master: Same design, empty coat of arms field for personal engraving. Director, father, business anniversary.
  • Troika: Russian folk symbol, three horses in a winter sleigh with blackening. Russia enthusiasts, wedding, winter gift.
  • Hunters at Rest (Perov): High relief based on Perov's painting from 1871. Art connoisseurs and hunters.
  • Capercaillie Hunt: High relief of big game, capercaillie sculpture as spoon crown. Hunters, St. Hubertus brotherhood.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Antique Patinated Double-Headed Eagle

What is the difference to the gilded version?
Same holder, same spoon style, same glass, same case — but the surface treatment differs. In the gilded version, the eagle is gold, while in this one it's in silver high relief with an antique patina in the recesses. The antique version looks classically dignified, the gilded one festive-representative — both use the same holder body and spoon style.

Is the blackening the same as Niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique (e.g., SevChern from Veliky Ustyug), where black paste is melted into engravings. ArgentA's blackening is a superficial patination in the recesses that enhances the 3D effect of high reliefs. Both processes are high-quality, but differ in technique, appearance, and care.

Why is the spoon called "Edinstvo" (Unity)?
"Единство" means unity or cohesion — a classic name from the Argenta silverware tradition, fitting the double-headed eagle coat of arms, which also symbolizes unity (Eurasia, three grand principalities).

Is the set suitable for railway workers?
It is classically a gift specifically for them. The Podstakannik has been official inventory of the Russian railway since 1892 — supplied by the same manufactory in Kolchugino, which today produces as ArgentA. Railway workers and their families immediately recognize this piece as "their world."

Why does the set not have the RZhD logo, but the Russian coat of arms?
Because the Russian coat of arms also covers state railway symbolism — the Russian Railways (RZhD) itself features the double-headed eagle coat of arms in its logo. Moreover, the double-headed eagle is not a political, but a heraldic symbol with European tradition (Holy Roman Empire, Habsburg).

Can I have the set additionally engraved?
Limitedly. The coat of arms medallion on the holder is occupied by the double-headed eagle. For a more engraving-focused set, we recommend our "The Master" set with an empty coat of arms field.

How big is the drinking glass?
The diamond-patterned crystal glass holds approx. 200 ml — ideal for a classic Russian teacup with strong black tea. Note: Argenta supplies either diamond-cut or faceted glass depending on availability; both fit the holder dimensionally and are reorderable.

Is the set dishwasher safe?
No, not the silver components. Please clean the holder and spoon only by hand. The diamond-patterned crystal glass is robust and dishwasher safe on a short, gentle cycle — but hand washing is gentler here too.

Who is the manufacturer?
The set comes from ArgentA, the silver manufactory from Kolchugino in the Vladimir Oblast (Russia). Classic line "Classic. Posuda" — complete in-house production from smelting to hand polishing, ECO-certified 925 Sterling Silver. This same manufactory historically supplied the Podstakanniki to the Russian railway.
