At the neck and base, narrow, almost meander-like geometric niello borders frame the free-flowing vines—a calm structural counterpoint to the curves of the main motif.

Material and craftsmanship

Niello is neither enamel nor lacquer—it is a black inlay that is fused into previously hand-engraved lines, ground flush, and polished—like ink in silver. A piece like this undergoes up to fifteen work steps: drawing, engraving, firing, grinding, and polishing. With each subsequent polishing, the contrasts deepen—the teapot becomes more beautiful over the years, not duller. This joining technique is one of the oldest refining methods in the art of silversmithing.

Care

Not dishwasher safe—this applies to all high-quality silver pieces with niello, as the chemicals in machine detergents can damage the surface over time.
