Description

The same construction as its quieter sibling, a different approach: On this 925 sterling silver candlestick, the entire stem is chased — and the motif is the poppy. Blossoms, buds, and leaves extend from the foot to the nozzle, without any polished interruption.

At a glance

  • Single-flame candlestick made of 925 sterling silver
  • Height approx. 39.5 cm — silver weight approx. 0.78 kg
  • Continuously chased: poppy blossoms, buds, and foliage
  • Domed base on four volute feet
  • "Poppy" model from the Signature line
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufacture since 1948

The Poppy

Among the floral motifs in silversmithing, the poppy is an unusual one. Rose, acanthus, and lily are common; the poppy appeared in the late 19th century when Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement sought forms that fell softer than the strict acanthus leaf.

It is particularly suitable for this: the blossom is bowl-shaped and catches light, the bud is a closed sphere, the leaves are finely feathered. Three very different forms from one plant — enough to structure an entire stem without repetition.

The work is chased by hand: hammered into the silver with punches. On a slender, tapering stem, this is the more difficult exercise because the motif must narrow towards the top without appearing compressed.

What continuous chasing achieves

A candlestick with polished zones reflects the flame as a surface. This one has no such surface — it breaks the light into many small reflections. By candlelight, the surface flickers along instead of shining steadily.

This is the real difference from the quieter model of the same height. If you place a pair on a set table, you will notice: the chased one appears livelier, the polished one more measured. Both are approx. 39.5 cm high and can be combined — they come from the same basic form.

Material and Origin

From the solid silver, two things are immediately apparent on a candlestick: chasing only succeeds in solid silver because a plating would tear under the punch. And silver reflects over 95 percent of visible light — more than any other utilitarian metal. Before electrification, this was precisely why candlesticks were made of silver. The Italian hallmark indicates the material.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The Signature line is the richly chased signature of the house.

Single or as a pair

Candlesticks traditionally work in pairs — to the left and right of a centerpiece, at the ends of a table. At approximately 39.5 cm, the flame extends above the set table without obstructing the view of the person opposite.

On a sideboard or console, the candlestick also stands alone because the poppy motif has enough independence not to require a counterpart.

Engraving

Due to the continuous chasing, there is no free surface on the stem. A discreet engraving on the underside of the foot remains possible — a common place for two initials or a date on a pair. We would be happy to advise you on this upon request. Optionally, we can include a SilverVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.

Occasions

For weddings as a pair, for silver anniversaries, for moving in. The poppy makes it a suitable piece for people who tend to be more playful than austere — and for summer gifts, when floral motifs are more appealing than acanthus.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. Wax residue is best removed by briefly chilling the candlestick — the wax can then be lifted off without scratching. Never use a knife. A soft brush is suitable for the depressions between the blossoms. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; in the depths, the darker toning can remain — with continuous chasing, it is this that makes the motif legible at all. Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of candles fit?

Classic stick candles with a 22 mm diameter, the standard size in retail.

How does it differ from the other 39.5 cm candlestick?

This one is continuously chased with a poppy motif and weighs approx. 0.78 kg. The other leaves polished zones free, appears calmer, and offers an engraving surface on the stem.

Can both models be combined?

Yes — this and the classic candlestick come from the same model number and have the same height. When placed as a pair, the candles burn at the same height.

Solid or silver-plated?

Solid 925 sterling silver, no plating, with official Italian hallmark.

Does it come in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.

The same model, a different decor

This candlestick and the classic candlestick of approx. 39.5 cm share a model number with the manufacturer. Same height, same construction — the difference lies solely in the motif: here, a poppy capsule decor runs over the foot and stem.

The poppy capsule is an old motif in table art. Its spherical, ribbed shape is particularly suitable for hammered silver because it breaks light into narrow strips — a visible effect by candlelight.

The other candlesticks in the line are the Mini at approx. 40 cm and the Maxi at approx. 47 cm. Because this and the classic candlestick have the same height, they can be placed as a pair without the candles burning at different heights.
