Description

Children's Spoon 925 Silver with Niello Piglet — Gilded Motif from Russian Manufactory

A cheerful gilded piglet adorns the inside of the spoon bowl — with a round body, large ears, and a friendly face that invites a smile. The cross-hatched patterns on the piglet's body are typical of the decorative imagery of the SevChern manufactory. The dark niello lines frame the motif, contrasting it sharply against the polished silver. On the back of the handle, a teardrop-shaped floral ornament in the same niello technique appears — a second decorative element that makes the spoon an eye-catcher from the back as well. This children's spoon comes from the SevChern manufactory, one of the few workshops worldwide that still master the centuries-old niello finishing technique.

What is Niello? — The Oldest Finishing Technique for Silver

Niello is an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is applied as a dark paste into pre-engraved ornaments. The process is one of the oldest finishing techniques for precious metals — archaeological finds prove its use as early as antiquity. The production of a single niello piece involves over 15 individual work processes: First, the motif is hand-engraved into the silver. Then, the niello mass is prepared, heated, and melted into the engraved lines. After cooling, the surface is ground, polished, and — where intended — partially gilded.

In Europe, this technique is rarely practiced today. The SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Russia, is one of the last workshops to execute niello with such quality and tradition. Each spoon bears the hallmark of the artist who created it — a sign of individual responsibility for the finished piece.

The Piglet Motif — Luck, Prosperity, and Joy of Life

The piglet on the inside of the spoon bowl is far more than just a cute figure. In almost all European cultures, the pig is considered one of the strongest bringers of good luck. The German expression "Schwein gehabt" (literally "had pig," meaning "to be lucky") is firmly established — and it refers to an ancient tradition: anyone who owned a pig had enough to eat and did not have to fear hardship. The pig stands for prosperity, abundance, and a carefree life.

In Slavic folklore, the piglet has a particularly warm meaning. It embodies fertility, contentment, and the joy of simple happiness. The piglet is not an animal that strives for something higher — it is content with what it has and finds its happiness in the here and now. For a birth gift, the piglet motif thus carries a heartfelt message: the wish that the child receives everything it needs for a happy and contented life.

The depiction in the typical SevChern style gives the piglet a special expressiveness. The cross-hatched patterns on the body, the large ears, and the friendly face create a figure that is both child-friendly and artistically sophisticated. The gilding further highlights the piglet motif — the warm gold symbolizes the prosperity that the pig has always represented. In combination with the dark niello lines and the cool silver, an image full of warmth and depth is created, inviting a smile with every glance.

The piglet as a gift motif has another advantage: it is universally positive. Whether for a birth, a baptism, or a first birthday — a golden lucky pig on a silver spoon combines symbolism with a wink and makes this piece a gift that is given and received with a smile.

Occasions and Target Groups

A children's spoon with niello finishing is not an everyday gift. It is aimed at people who are looking for a silver gift with cultural depth and artistic Anspruch — beyond usual motifs and designs. The piglet motif also lends this piece a special lightness and warmth.

  • Birth: As first silver cutlery with symbolic power — the lucky piglet as a wish for a life of abundance and contentment
  • Baptism: A lasting keepsake that symbolizes prosperity and happiness — a message that endures for generations
  • First Birthday: For families looking for a gift that combines tradition and a wink

For grandparents and godparents, who are looking for a gift with history — not only materially valuable, but culturally significant.
For collectors of Russian silver art, who wish to expand their repertoire with a functional piece of jewelry.
For parents, who consciously choose a gift that stands out from the crowd and carries a heartfelt message with its lucky symbol.

Engraving and SilberVerse Card

Due to the double-sided niello ornaments, this children's spoon cannot be engraved. The spoon bowl bears the gilded piglet motif, the handle the floral ornament — there is no free space for an engraving without affecting the overall artistic impression.

SilberVerse Card — our personal gift card: Even without engraving, you can add a personal touch to this gift. Upon request, we will design an individual SilberVerse card in photo format (10×15 cm) — matching the occasion, the recipient, and with your personal message. Each card is unique. Simply specify your wish when ordering, and we will contact you to coordinate the details. Currently free of charge.

Material and Care

The spoon is made of solid 925 Sterling Silver and bears the official silver hallmark as well as the artist's manufacturer's mark. The gilding is applied to the engraved areas of the piglet motif and is permanently bonded to the silver.

Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap. Then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Never use silver dip cleaners or aggressive cleaning agents — these can attack the niello filling and permanently damage the dark contrasts. For the polished silver surfaces, we recommend a special silver polishing cloth if necessary. The gilding does not require special care, but should not be treated with abrasive cleaners. Not dishwasher safe. The included gift box is suitable for storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is niello and is it safe for babies?
Niello is a dark metal alloy that is melted into engraved ornaments. After cooling, the filling is firmly bonded to the silver and chemically stable. The technique has been used since antiquity and is completely safe when used as intended. The spoon is made of food-safe 925 Sterling Silver.

Can the spoon be engraved?
No. Both sides of the spoon bear niello ornaments — the bowl has the gilded piglet motif, the handle has a floral ornament. An engraving would destroy the overall artistic impression. As a personal alternative, we offer the free SilberVerse card.

From what age is the spoon suitable?
From birth as a symbolic gift and collector's item. For first attempts at eating under supervision from approx. 6–12 months — depending on the child's development. Due to the artistic finishing, many families keep this spoon more as a keepsake.

What does the piglet on the spoon symbolize?
The pig is considered one of the strongest bringers of good luck in almost all European cultures. It stands for prosperity, abundance, and a carefree life. "Schwein gehabt" (to be lucky) is a common German idiom — and the gilded piglet on this spoon carries precisely this message: the wish for a happy, contented life for the gifted child.

Where does the spoon come from and who makes it?
The spoon comes from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Russia. This city has been the center of Russian niello art since the 17th century. Each piece bears the personal hallmark of the executing artist — a mark of quality that documents individual responsibility for the finished work.
