Material and workmanship

The niello motif on the bowl is a composition: at its center, a rhombus medallion with a dot-grid infill, flanked by two acanthus volutes that unfold symmetrically into the surface. On the domed lid, the language is repeated in a different form — a central palmette motif with two lateral volute scrolls. A narrow decorative band with the same acanthus elements runs along the footring, creating a cohesive ornamental system from base to top. Niello is an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into engraved depressions and chemically bonds with the silver — not a foil, not a lacquer, but part of the metal itself.
