Material and craftsmanship

Niello is a black inlay that is fused into the engraved lines, ground flush, and polished – like ink in silver — permanently. The motif of the Peonia line is the peony, a symbol of prosperity, happiness, and marriage in the Russian cultural tradition. The lid features a narrow border with two acanthus scrolls flanking a central palmette element. The Peonia sugar bowl is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug. Over time, as the silver is polished, the contrast between the dark niello and the bright silver deepens — the bowl becomes more expressive with the years.

Usage and occasions

A thoughtful detail is hidden in the lid: an opening on the edge that fits standard sugar spoons universally. This keeps the bowl ready for serving at all times without needing to remove the lid. With a capacity of 160 ml, it is sufficient for a sociable coffee or mocha afternoon. The Peonia line includes a matching mocha cup (60 ml) — both from the same SevChern workshop, with identical peony niello and the same trumpet base, together forming a harmonious mocha set for two.
