Tsar Dadon receives from an astrologer a golden cockerel that crows as soon as danger threatens. When the cockerel reports danger, Dadon sends his sons into the field, but none returns. Then he sets out himself and meets the Queen of Shemakha in her tent. He takes the beauty home, and when the astrologer demands his promised reward, the tale takes a bitter turn. Rimsky-Korsakov also made an opera of it, “The Golden Cockerel”.
