Material and craftsmanship

The rooster on this spoon is crafted in niello – a centuries-old technique where a dark silver-copper-lead-sulfur alloy is hand-melted into previously engraved lines. Each contour of the plumage is first hand-engraved before the niello compound is fired, ground, and polished. The result is not an applied color, but a firm bond with the silver that does not fade even after years, but rather gains contrast when polished. We call these artworks Nielloa – our name for the traditional niello handcraft that originates at SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, the center of the Russian niello tradition since the 17th century. The gilding of the rooster provides a warm contrast against the cool, highly polished silver and the dark niello lines. The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver, is food-safe and nickel-free.

Care

Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild detergent, then dry with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dips and aggressive cleaning agents – they attack the niello filling and can permanently damage the dark contrasts. The polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth if necessary, the gilding does not require special care, but cannot tolerate abrasive cleaners. The spoon is not dishwasher safe and finds a safe place in the included gift box.
