Material and workmanship

The piglet motif is created in niello – a dark silver-copper-lead-sulfur alloy that is hand-melted into previously engraved lines. Every contour, every cross-hatching on the piglet's body is first hand-engraved before the niello mass is fired, ground, and polished. The result is a firm bond with the silver, no lacquer and no paint – the dark contrasts remain for years and deepen with polishing. We call these artworks Nielloa, our name for the traditional handcraft created at SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, the center of the Russian niello tradition since the 17th century. The gilding of the piglet provides a warm accent against the cool, highly polished silver. The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver, is food-safe and nickel-free.

The pig is one of the strongest good luck charms in almost all European cultures – the expression "Schwein gehabt" (literally "had pig", meaning "got lucky") is still vivid proof of this. Whoever owned a pig had enough to eat and did not have to fear hardship: the animal has always stood for prosperity, abundance, and a carefree life. Care

Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild detergent, then dry with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dips and aggressive cleaning agents – they attack the niello filling and can permanently damage the dark contrasts. The polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth if necessary, the gilding does not require any special care, but does not tolerate abrasive cleaners. The spoon is not dishwasher safe and finds a safe place in the supplied gift box.

Yes. Niello is a solid alloy that is melted into the engraving and then chemically stably bonded with the silver. The spoon is made of food-safe 925 sterling silver.
