Material and workmanship

The goat on this spoon is executed in niello – a dark silver-copper-lead-sulfur alloy that is melted by hand into previously engraved lines. The horns, the implied fur, and the upright posture are first hand-engraved before the niello paste is fired, ground, and polished. The result is a solid bond with the silver, not an applied color – the contrasts are preserved for years and even deepen with polishing. We call these artworks Nielloa, our name for the traditional handicraft that is created at SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, the center of the Russian niello tradition since the 17th century. The gilding of the goat provides a warm accent against the cool, highly polished silver and the dark niello lines. The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver, is food-safe and nickel-free.

Care

Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap, then dry with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dips and aggressive cleaning agents – they attack the niello filling and can permanently damage the dark contrasts. The polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth if necessary, the gilding does not require any special care, but cannot tolerate abrasive cleaners. The spoon is not dishwasher safe and finds a safe place in the supplied gift box.
