Description
Children's Spoon, 925 Silver with Niello Goat — Gilded Motif from a Russian Manufactory
An upright, gilded goat adorns the inside of the spoon bowl — with distinctive horns, a hinted beard, and a proud posture that radiates determination. The folkloric depiction shows the goat in typical SevChern style: decorative, expressive, with an apron reminiscent of Russian folk tales. Dark niello lines frame the motif, contrasting it sharply against the polished silver. On the back of the handle, a drop-shaped floral ornament appears in the same niello technique — a second decorative element that makes the spoon an eye-catcher even from behind. This children's spoon comes from the SevChern manufactory, one of the few workshops worldwide that still master the centuries-old niello finishing technique.

What is Niello? — The Oldest Finishing Technique for Silver
Niello is an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, applied as a dark paste into pre-engraved ornaments. This process is among the oldest finishing techniques for precious metal — archaeological finds confirm its use as far back as antiquity. The creation of a single niello piece involves over 15 individual work processes: First, the motif is hand-engraved into the silver. Then, the niello mass is prepared, heated, and melted into the engraved lines. After cooling, the surface is ground, polished, and — where intended — partially gilded.
In Europe, this technique is rarely practiced today. The SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Russia, is one of the last workshops to execute niello with such quality and tradition. Each spoon bears the hallmark of the executing artist — a sign of individual responsibility for the finished piece.
The Goat Motif — Independence, Determination, and Vitality
The goat on the inside of the spoon bowl is a characterful figure. In symbolism, the goat stands for independence, determination, vitality, and willpower. It is the animal that goes its own way — fearless, persistent, and with a natural authority that arises from inner strength. The proverbial "stubborn goat" is essentially a compliment: it won't be bent and stands by what it believes is right.
In Slavic folklore, the goat plays a multifaceted role. It appears as a mischievous, clever character who masters every situation with wit and cunning. In Russian folk tales, the goat is often the one who outwits other animals and solves problems through its ingenuity where stronger animals fail. The folkloric depiction on this spoon picks up on this tradition: the goat stands upright, almost human, with a hinted apron — a figure from a storybook, familiar to children and reminding adults of the stories of their own childhood.
For a gift at birth or baptism, the goat motif carries a powerful message: the wish that the child develops an independent character, remains unyielding, and finds its place in the world with cleverness and determination. It is a motif for parents who wish their child not conformity, but strength — the strength to go their own way.
The gilding highlights the goat in warm gold. The distinctive horns, the upright posture, and the detailed patterns of the fur contrast with the dark niello lines and polished silver. This interplay of three surfaces gives the figure a plastic depth that makes the goat appear almost alive.

- Birth: As a first silver cutlery with symbolic power — the goat as a wish for independence and willpower
- Baptism: A lasting keepsake with the message that strength comes from character — not conformity
- Special Birthday: For collectors and lovers of Russian silver art — a piece with folkloric charm
For grandparents and godparents, who are looking for a gift with history — not only materially valuable but culturally significant.

Engraving and SilberVerse Card
This children's spoon cannot be engraved due to the double-sided niello ornaments. The spoon bowl features the gilded goat motif, and the handle has the floral ornament — there is no free space for an engraving without detracting from the overall artistic design.
SilberVerse Card — our personal gift card: Even without engraving, you can add a personal touch to this gift. Upon request, we will design an individual SilberVerse Card in photo format (10x15 cm) — matching the occasion, the recipient, and with your personal message. Each card is unique. Simply specify your wishes when ordering, and we will contact you to coordinate the details. Currently free of charge.
Material and Care
The spoon is made of solid 925 Sterling Silver and bears the official silver hallmark as well as the artist's manufactory mark. The gilding is applied to the engraved areas of the goat motif and is permanently bonded to the silver.
Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap. Then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Never use silver dips or aggressive cleaning agents — these can attack the niello filling and permanently damage the dark contrasts. For the polished silver surfaces, we recommend a special silver polishing cloth if needed. The gilding does not require special care, but should not be treated with abrasive cleaners. Not dishwasher safe. The supplied gift box is suitable for storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is niello and is it safe for babies?
Niello is a dark metal alloy that is melted into engraved ornaments. After cooling, the filling is firmly bonded to the silver and chemically stable. The technique has been used since antiquity and is completely safe with intended use. The spoon is made of food-safe 925 sterling silver.
Can the spoon be engraved?
No. Both sides of the spoon feature niello ornaments — the bowl with the gilded goat motif, the handle with a floral ornament. An engraving would destroy the overall artistic design. As a personal alternative, we offer the free SilberVerse card.
From what age is the spoon suitable?
From birth as a symbolic gift and collector's item. For first attempts at eating under supervision from approx. 6–12 months — depending on the child's development. Due to the artistic embellishment, many families keep this spoon as a keepsake.
What does the goat on the spoon symbolize?
The goat stands for independence, determination, and willpower. In Slavic folklore, it is considered a mischievous, clever animal that masters every situation with wit and ingenuity. The goat motif carries the message that the gifted child develops a strong, independent character and goes its own way.
Where does the spoon come from and who makes it?
The spoon comes from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Russia. This city has been the center of Russian niello art since the 17th century. Each piece bears the personal hallmark of the executing artist — a quality mark that documents individual responsibility for the finished work.
