Engraving on silver baby gifts: how your gift gets a name and a date

A name, a date, two initials: that is all it takes to turn a silver baby gift into a personal one. Whether it is a baby spoon, a baby rattle or a children's cup – the engraving makes the piece something that belongs to this very child.

Engraving is not a standard feature of every piece, though. Whether it works depends on the shape: is there a smooth, free surface or a designated engraving field? In this guide you will find out how to order the engraving, what can be engraved on which piece, how many characters fit, which wordings work well – and what you can do if a piece cannot be engraved.

How the engraving works: five steps

You do not need to clarify anything in advance or get anything approved. You order the engraving like an accessory, together with the piece:

1. Order: add the piece and the engraving flat fee to your cart

Choose your silver piece and add the matching engraving service flat fee to your cart: up to approx. 20 characters for a name and date, or up to approx. 30 characters for a little more text, for example on a birth spoon. Add one flat fee for each piece you want engraved; the two engraving fields on a rattle are covered by a single flat fee. You will find the prices of both flat fees on the product pages.

2. Agreeing the wording: we go through it with you

After you have ordered, we agree with you exactly what goes on the piece: spelling of the name, date format, upper or lower case, position. You can enter your text as a note at checkout or send it to us after ordering by email to shop@premiumgeschenk.de or via WhatsApp to +49 159 01912255. We are also happy to answer questions before you order.

3. Check: can this piece be engraved?

We look at whether your piece has a suitable surface, whether the text fits on it and whether you chose the right flat fee. If the engraving is not possible or the flat fee does not fit, we refund it. That way you never pay for an engraving we cannot carry out.

4. Engraving: in our engraving workshop or directly at the manufacturer

Depending on the piece, we engrave it in our engraving workshop in Chemnitz or have it engraved directly by the manufacturer. We decide which route suits your piece – you do not need to worry about it.

5. Shipping: your gift arrives in a gift box

Your piece is then sent to you in a gift box, ready to give. The engraving extends the delivery time by 1–3 working days, so allow a little extra time before a christening, birthday or Christmas.

What can be engraved where?

For every piece we distinguish three cases: engravable (there is a suitable surface), subject to checking (we look at the piece first) and not engravable (surface, shape or decoration do not allow it). Each product page states which applies to that piece.

Baby spoons and children's cutlery

Spoons and forks with a smooth handle can usually be engraved on the back of the handle. One example is the Stars and Moon baby spoon with an engravable back, another the curved Teddy Silhouette baby spoon. Spoons whose handle is fully decorated on both sides cannot be engraved, nor can the zodiac spoons and forks. Read more in Engraved silver spoons for christenings.

Birth spoons

Birth spoons are made for engraving: depending on the model, there are designated fields for the time of birth, weight and length, and the name goes on the back. Not every model has a date field – in that case the date goes on the back together with the name. You can see which fields your model has in the product photos, for example on the Stork birth spoon or the Duckling.

Baby rattles: the handle and the disc decide

With a baby rattle, it all depends on the handle – and on some models on the disc as well:

• Smooth handle: The free, smooth handle is the engraving surface, for example on the Duckling with smooth handle, the Swan with smooth handle or the Teddy Silhouette. Many motifs come in two versions, smooth and textured. The smooth version is the engravable one.
• Handle and disc: On the rattle with fixed disc and the rattle with rotating disc, the engraving usually goes on the smooth handle; the disc can also be engraved, in the centre.
• Handle with engraving field: Some textured handles leave a small smooth field free.
• Ball head with two engraving fields: On the ball rattle with elephant, there are two engraving fields on one side of the handle. We recommend two engravings: the name in one field, the date or occasion in the other. The same applies to the ball rattle with train.
• Dumbbell: On the dumbbell rattles with a free disc, the engraving goes in the centre of the disc, possible on both sides. The dumbbell with teddy bear has a relief on its discs and cannot be engraved.
• Ring rattles with a smooth surface: The heart rattle on a silver ring offers a smooth surface on the heart, the Teddy Silhouette on an acrylic ring a smooth belly.
• Not engravable: Handles with line patterns, ribbon decoration or continuous relief have neither a smooth surface nor a designated engraving field. The other rattles on a ring or acrylic ring do not offer a surface either.

Children's cups, christening cups and baby mugs

Depending on the model, cups and mugs have space for a name and date on the outside or on the base. Take a look at the children's cups and christening cups collections; for richly decorated christening cups, we check the free surface first.

Pieces with gold plating, enamel, frames and christening coins

Here the rule is “subject to checking”: with gold-plated surfaces and enamel, it depends on whether a free silver surface remains next to them. For picture frames we look at the frame, for birth and christening coins usually the back. You still order the flat fee directly with the piece; if the engraving is not possible, we refund it.

How many characters fit?

The character counts are guide values. How much actually fits on your piece depends on the surface and the font size and is confirmed when we agree the wording. Spaces do not count as characters and are not charged; it is best to count full stops and hyphens.

The “up to approx. 20 characters” flat fee is enough for a first name and a date, the “up to approx. 30 characters” flat fee for a longer text. If you need more, just get in touch – we will see what is possible on the piece.

Ideas for the wording

The most beautiful engravings are short. A name and a date say everything that will matter later. A few suggestions, with the character count excluding spaces:

Name and date (up to approx. 20 characters)

• “Emma 12.04.2026” (14 characters)
• “Liam · 03.05.2026” (15 characters)
• “E. M. 12.04.2026” (14 characters)
• “Sophie Anna” (10 characters)

With a little more text (up to approx. 30 characters)

• “Emma Marie · christened 12.04.2026” (30 characters)
• “Welcome, little Mia Sophie” (23 characters)
• “For Noah, with love from Mum & Dad” (27 characters)
• “Emma, christened on 15.06.2026” (27 characters)

Two fields on one side of the handle: Teddy Medallion

On the Teddy Medallion baby rattle with ball head, there are two engraving fields on one side of the handle. We recommend two engravings: the name in one field, the date or occasion in the other. For example:

• “Emma” and “12.04.26”
• “Noah” and “Christening”

Initials and short fields (approx. 10 characters)

• “E. M.”
• “Noah”
• “15.06.26”

A quotation, a poem or a Bible verse will not fit on the engraving surface of a baby gift. For longer words there is the SilberVerse card, which you will find just below.

Tips for an engraving without surprises

What helps: check the spelling of names and dates several times, choose a consistent date format (such as DD.MM.YYYY), decide deliberately on upper or lower case (“EMMA” or “Emma”) and order early, especially before Christmas and in the christening season. Bring up umlauts and special characters with us when we agree the wording.

Better to avoid: texts that are too long, too much information at once (name, date, time and weight quickly look cluttered), typos, and symbols, emojis or special characters you have not agreed with us; we check a logo or a font of your own, see the question on this further below. An engraving cannot be corrected.

The SilberVerse card: the alternative when engraving is not possible

Not every piece has a free surface, and sometimes the text is longer than an engraving can hold. In that case the SilberVerse card is the right solution, also as an addition to an engraving. It is free on request.

It is a verse of three to four lines, matching the occasion and the name, in the language of your choice, for example German, English or Russian. The verse and the card image are created with the help of AI based on your details and printed as a photo card in 15 × 10 cm format (landscape). Caring for engraved silver gifts

An engraving does not change how you care for the piece: clean by hand with warm water and mild washing-up liquid, be gentle around the engraving, dry immediately with a soft cloth and polish with a silver polishing cloth when needed. Not in the dishwasher, no scouring agents. Store in a dry place, ideally in the gift box.

How do I order an engraving?

Add the silver piece and the matching engraving service flat fee (up to approx. 20 characters or up to approx. 30 characters) to your cart together. No prior enquiry or approval is needed. We agree the wording with you after you have ordered.

How many characters fit on a piece?

As a guide, up to approx. 20 characters fit on a smooth handle, about 10 characters on engraving fields on textured handles and up to approx. 30 characters on larger surfaces. We confirm exactly how much fits on your piece when we agree the wording. Spaces do not count as characters and are not charged.

What happens if engraving is not possible on my piece?

Then we refund the engraving flat fee. The same applies if the chosen flat fee does not fit the text.

How long does it take with engraving?

The engraving extends the delivery time by 1–3 working days. This is added to the usual delivery time: 3–5 working days within Germany, 5–7 working days abroad.

Can I return an engraved piece?

Engraved items are excluded from the right of withdrawal, because an engraving cannot be undone. So please check the name and date carefully. Everything about withdrawal is on the page Withdrawing from the contract.

Can I have a piece I have already bought engraved later?

Yes, by arrangement: you send us the piece at your own expense, provided it has a suitable surface. We discuss the costs with you beforehand, because it is not always worthwhile. It is often easier and cheaper to ask an engraving workshop near you. Ideally, show them the piece and ask whether it is suitable.

Can I have my own font or a logo engraved?

In principle, yes. We check with our master engraver what is possible on your piece, advise against it if in doubt or suggest a better option. This extends processing and delivery time. If your deadline is tight, we decline a custom font or logo; if you are happy to wait, we will gladly do it.

What if my piece cannot be engraved?

Then the SilberVerse card remains as a personal addition: free on request, with a verse for the occasion and the name.
